Plantae Selectae is one of the great botanical iconographies, published at the beginning of the 100-year period known as the golden age of European botanical prints. In his drawings of ornamental plants for patrons, Ehret often included analyses, his botanical knowledge and accuracy enabling him to produce works of scientific value as well as great beauty. Recognition of his scientific achievement was marked by his election to the Royal Society in 1757, and was honored in his native Germany. (Robson, Classic Natural History Prints)
