Bildniskopf (Self-portrait), 1950
by Erich Heckel (1883 to 1970)
This woodcut print is signed and dated in pencil by the artist.
Heckel was the leading German Expressionist and one of the charter members of Die Brücke, founded in Dresden in 1905. Their meetings took place in a former butcher shop. Die Brücke moved to Berlin in 1911, where they met most of the painters of the avant-garde but the group disbanded in 1913. After seeing the Futurist exhibition in April 1912, Heckel's style became prismatic, organized in a series of triangular planes.

Matted and gallery-wrapped in archival materials.
