Bordeaux is in the southwest of France, near the Atlantic coast on the Bay of Biscay. The wine region wide covers 60 square miles around Bordeaux, the region's main city, along three rivers, the Gironde, Garonne and Dordogne, on the biggest estuary in Europe. The wines of each sub-region have their own distinct characteristics.
