John Ogilby (1600 to 1676)

One of the more colorful figures associated with cartography, Ogilby started life as a dancing master and finished as the King's Cosmographer and Geographic Printer.

In 1675 Ogilby published the first really accurate set of road maps, measuring the distances using a 'Wheel Dimensurator' or 'waywiser.' His use of the statute mile of 1760 yards helped to establish it as a standard throughout England.
