United States: Missouri
Under the conditions of the Missouri Compromise, Missouri was admitted to the Union as a slave state on August 10, 1821. On October 31, 1861, the state legislature passed an ordinance to secede from the Union and "... take its place as a free and independent republic amongst the nations of the earth." It was admitted to the Confederacy on November 28, 1861. Nonetheless, Union troops occupied the state, enforcing President Lincoln's refusal to recognize Missouri's secession.
