American Historical Prints: Indian Portraits
Original, Hand-colored Lithographs, 1872

These portraits are from the second volume of Thomas L. McKenney's landmark history of the Indian tribes, originally published in three volumes in 1844. The title page of this 1872 edition reads:

History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs.
Embellished with One Hundred Portraits from the Indian Gallery in the War Department at Washington.
By Thomas L. McKenney, Late of the Indian Department, Washington.
