Artists of Note: Baxter Prints
George Baxter, English, (1804 to 1867), is generally considered the inventor of color printing. He patented a process, a combination of intaglio and relief printing, in 1835 which involved an initial metal plate and up to 20 wood or metal blocks to apply each individual color, all done on hand presses! Although Baxter licensed his process to a number of other printers, the technique was seldom used after his death.
Depending on availability, you'll find both original prints by George Baxter and prints by licensees of the Baxter Process.
