Cover: Thomas Maitland Cleland (1880-1964)
Thomas Maitland Cleland began his versatile career as an illustrator at age sixteen, when his discovery of Walter Crane's The Decorative Illustration of Books inspired him to explore book-making and illustration. He went on to become art editor of McClure's Magazine. After World War II, he established a printing company of his own, where he produced the notable Grammar of Color for the Strathmore Paper Co. He devoted himself to drawing and painting in his later life.
