Bertha Lum
Born in 1879 in Iowa, Lum was a bookbinder, painter, illustrator and etcher. She became interested in Japanese art and culture after seeing an exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair of 1893. Lum visited Japan three times from 1903 through 1911, eventually mastering Japanese printmaking techniques. She was the only Western artist in the 1912 Tenth Annual Art Exhibit in Ueno Park.
