Don Juan
Lord George Gordon Byron (1788 to 1824)
London: Thomas Davison, 1820 8vo. Six volumes, original, full leather binding. VG

Byron wrote his satirical Don Juan between 1818 and 1819. This early edition was published between 1820 and 1824. A luxurious six-volume set, it is bound in five-band full-leather with gilt-stamped spine decorations, bumped and scuffed corners, endspines and scuffed hinges. All volumes have handsome marbles endpapers.

This set was originally owned by Sir William Augustus Fraser (Feb. 10, 1826 to August 17, 1898), member of Parliament, the son of Sir John James Fraser (one of Wellington's staff at Waterloo), and an author of several notable volumes including Disraeli And His Day (1891) and Napoleon III (1896). Fraser's book collection was auctioned off just after his death in 1898 for more than £20,000.

Also contained at the lower left corners of each bookplate is the last name Van Vechten, the only other owner of this handsome set in its lengthy history. This was Helen Van Vechten, fine printer of the Philosopher Press in Wasau, Wisconsin. A wonderful history for a stunning set!
