Courses

First of all, to become eligible for an ultrasound technician one has to pass the core subjects such as biology, physics, chemistry, anatomy. The medical institutes offering this course prefer students with a good grasp on these subjects. However, one with a background in mathematics and science can also apply. Medical schools and institutes also offer a chance to those who have a background in arts.

Most common

As I stated in the last paragraph, there are many different courses pursued by the ultrasound technician, but the following three are the most common to become eligible for a job:

  • Four years bachelor’s degree
  • Two years associates degree
  • One year certificate or diploma

But the question arises, which degree is the best?

Two years associate’s degree

An associate degree program is the entry level program offering courses that last between 20 to 24 months. These are the sonographers who have a duty to interact with the patients. So apart from learning about ultrasound and its equipment, they also learn the ways to take care of a patient. Mastery in medical ethics is also important.

Four years bachelor’s degree

Four years bachelor’s degree courses pursued by the ultrasound technician earn more as they have a good grasp of their field of specialization. They can even get involved in research projects and have excellent problem-solving skills. Many ultrasound technicians with a bachelor’s degree start their career in medicine which is quite rewarding.

This degree is mostly pursued by those who have a certificate issued according to the rules of American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Most of these are currently working in this field.

One should have knowledge of general science course, or they have to take this course alongside with the bachelor’s degree which becomes a hectic process. So the best option is to go step by step.

One year certificate or diploma

One who pursues this one year certificate program gets the most rewards. It takes 12 to 18 months of hard work to get this certificate. The best part is that one gets a specialization in his/her field which makes it easy to get a job. But, to be eligible for these courses pursued by the ultrasound technician, one has to complete an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree. However, this certificate program is shorter than the programs mentioned above, but the subjects are all related to the specialization. So the pursuer gets an in-depth knowledge of the subject and can perform better at the interviews and even on the job.
